AWP’s Femy Amin to stand in Mayor of London Election

Femy Amin will stand as Animal Welfare Party’s candidate for the Mayor of London election while a party list of 7 candidates, a record for AWP, will contest the London-wide Assembly Election on 2nd May.

Amin, a healthcare professional, came to the UK as a teenage Afghan refugee and describes herself as long being motivated to create a fairer, more compassionate society. She first stood for election for AWP in 2019, in the constituency of Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner before standing again in the 2021 London-wide Assembly election, just days before giving birth.

Campaigning under the slogan of ‘London Act Now’, she cites the growing crises of climate, biodiversity, health and inequality as her motivation to stand in the capital’s Mayoral election. “I know a fairer, liveable future is possible, but we must come together and act now”, she says.

Her seven point plan for London includes:

  • Fighting for a liveable planet – prioritising the climate & biodiversity crises in all decision-making
  • Saving NHS funds, improving human & planet health by promoting & supporting plant-based lifestyles
  • Incentivising public & active transport by improving reliability, safety & affordability
  • Enhancing protection for the millions of animals in the capital, establishing an Animal Welfare Committee within the London Assembly
  • Leading on creating homes for all that are affordable & sustainable
  • Making the capital a global leader in opposing speciesism – where wildlife is valued & managed non-lethally, developments in animal-free testing are championed & the sale of foie gras & fur is rejected
  • Dedicating urgently needed space for nature & ensuring pesticide & herbicide use becomes a thing of the past

Amin’s standing marks the second time AWP has stood a candidate in the London Mayoral Election, with Vanessa Hudson, the party’s leader, standing in 2021. She heads the party’s list this time in the London-wide Assembly Election and is joined by Saffron Gloyne, Alex Bourke, Femy Amin, Bel Jacobs, Mark Scott and Julian Weisman.
